Spring is in full effect, flowers are blooming, the farms have gone into overdrive to get ready for the summer and fall harvest. The weather starts with a light chill in the morning before the sun is shining bright by midday. It's not too hot, not too cold, and all sorts of people are opting to spend more time outside. Meanwhile, the students have been under a LOT of stress as school finals are ending! Yadah University and Minarai invite you all onto the campuses to see just what the students achieved before school lets out for the summer!

Yadah University has a couple of booths set up here and there, some on sciences and the inventions they made. A particular group of science students are super excited to explain their backstory and why they created their various inventions. In the middle of the quad, there's a stage where the arts and music students are performing. You're welcome to be an audience member, or, if it's an improv group, you might very well get pulled up on stage to help with the skit!

But the most popular booths of all are the magic booths. Yadah University is the only school that teaches practical magic, and the big ticket for this semester?

NON-MAGICAL ANIMAL TRANSFORMATIONS!

Yes, that's right, either with a wave of their wands or hands, a spell incantation, or standing in a magic circle with interesting drawings and ruins, you will be turned into an animal that most aligns with SOME aspect of your personality. Maybe you're incredibly relaxed and get turned into a bearded dragon! Maybe you can't even rub two brain cells together and are turned into a jellyfish. Maybe you're as sly as a fox or as loyal as a dog! No matter what you get turned into, for the next 24 hours, you are painlessly turned into an animal.

Now, while that is all well and good for those who volunteer to be transformed, well, these ARE students, and so there are varying degrees of success. In THEORY, you should be able to transform back and forth as you please and communicate with those around you... again, in theory.

In reality?

Weellll, there's bound to be some mishaps. Some people may not be able to transform back AT ALL, some may not be able to communicate, some only have PARTS of their body transformed, like the mane of a lion instead of your hair or the wings of a parrot instead of your arms. Some may have shrunk you down to the size of a mouse, but not changed anything else about you! Or maybe every time you sneeze or hiccup, you're forced to transform. Maybe you change back and forth due to hot or cold water being poured on you! Magic is really tricky!

Worst of all! You may have been shot with a stray spell and turned into an animal, whether you wanted to or not! Super sorry about that! But don't worry, no matter the level of mastery, it all wears off in 24 hours, and all of it is a painless transformation, so at least there's that. Well... at worst, 72 hours. But that's it! They promise!

Maybe hearing that a stray spell might strike you causes you to steer clear of Yadah University. Well, why not visit Minarai?

Minarai High School has its end-of-the-year Sports Day Festival! There are booths selling food from the Home Ec. classes, face painting from the drama class students, if you are feeling unsure of where to go or what to do, the Student Council is happy to show you around the school as guides! 

On more than one occasion, you may notice that certain booths will need help here and there. Maybe they need an extra hand in painting faces or selling baked goods, maybe you're asked to help watch over Minnow students and toddlers to allow parents to partake in some of the other activities! Speaking of some of those activities, there are all sorts all over the school.

There are your typical games: like the three-legged race, the egg-balancing race, the wheelbarrow walk race, the baton-pass race, water-balloon toss, the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, tug-of-war, a riddle scavenger hunt through the school, and other typical activities you might find. There are, however, also unconventional activities! Like the Inflatable Hamster Ball Obstacle Race in the gymnasium!  For a REAL challenge, there's even THE ULTIMATE OBSTACLE COURSE! that has been set up in the center of the school's track-meet field.

But perhaps you don't want to be anywhere near the schools. There is a much more peaceful option available to you.

                        Sunset Memories
                    
All throughout the Main Hub and Outer Rim, you will hear the locals talk about how "it's been 13 years!" As well as posters featuring a reminder to "camp safely and responsibly when viewing," whatever that may mean.

As it so happens, there are just rows and rows of charter buses set up near the Farmlands with lots of people getting on, putting camping gear in the storage compartments, and giant backpacks as well. Why?

For the Sunset Awakening, of course!

That's probably not all that informative (because it isn't), but if you do happen to go, get ready for a once-every-13-years phenomenon! After hours and hours and hours and hours on the bus, driving past the Farmlands and through the smaller mountain range that sits at the edge of the Farmlands, you will arrive in a desert.

It is immediately clear that this desert is more or less uninhabited by Iyashikei residents. However, there is a sense of... memory all over. Maybe you suddenly feel more nostalgic, maybe you suddenly feel more reflective. It's like the very sands and trees hold something within them... but... what?

There aren't any airships that fly overhead, and outside of the Ranger Outpost, this is a place left untouched. Once the buses drop you off, you're shown to the designated temporary campsites. The rangers there are happy to welcome you, so long as you are respectful of the desert. The Rangers go over the rules and expectations at the campsites, your standard fare about throwing out all your trash and food scraps in the correct bins, being mindful about fires, and respecting nature and other campers. If you don't have the correct tools and gear, thankfully, they have spares and backups.

All of this is very confusing, but there is excitement in the air. There's plenty of talk about "hoping one lands on them."

Lands on them?

As it would happen, every 13 years for exactly one month and one month only, there is a rather ethereal magical creature that emerges. Just as the sun is setting, tens of thousands of fuzzy Sunset Moths will come up from underneath the sands of the desert, climbing up the trees and unfurling their white wings under the light of the setting sun. The moths seemingly catch the colors of those last rays of light in their wings, and the wings go from white to beautiful pinks, reds, yellows, oranges, greens, purples, and any number of combinations.

The ground and trees become practically covered in these moths as they breed and lay their eggs in the sand. The sky is a constant artificial sunset as they fly through the air. There are all sorts of predators that come out to enjoy the feast, but that's not why people are here.

If a Sunset Moth lands on you, and there is a very good chance it will, considering how many there are, the Sunset Moth will leave a trail of glittery dust along the skin and restore a lost memory or feeling. The memory or feeling may be sweet, it may be sentimental, it may be bittersweet, or it may remind you of happier times. The memory or feeling is always, in some way positive, at least in some fashion, even if those memories or feelings might be in short supply for some.

The Sunset Moths are a reminder of the temporary nature of everything, living only for a couple of weeks after they emerge from the sand. Once the month is over, the buses return to take everyone back. The desert is protected land; it's not meant for those brought to Iyashikei to inhabit.

                        Weather Wise
                    
While Iyashikei is usually a very warm and welcoming place, as the month of May starts drawing to a close, there is a distinct sense of... nervousness? Worry? Fear? At least something bordering on concern as the month continues.

Why?

Well, the immediate answer is that June is the rainy season, and Iyashikei is filled with canals and waterways. While some flooding is to be expected, it's best to be overprepared rather than caught off guard. But there is... something a bit unusual about their answer. There's the sense that something more is under the surface but any attempt to get a more in-depth answer is met with just concern about how bad things can get and trying to use any sort of magic or abilities doesn't get them to open up any further.

So it's time to get weather-wise! There's no telling how bad it will be this year! So all of Iyashikei is getting involved, as it so often does. There's waterproofing the roofs and walls of homes. You can help by filling up hundreds and hundreds of sandbags. There's making first aid kits for anyone who is a new arrival, or going from home to home and helping make sure everyone has what they need. You can help by cleaning up the pathways along the canals so that when they flood, trash and dirt don't get in the water. In some homes, you can help by moving furniture upstairs, reinforcing windows, and taking inventory of how much clean water they have. Houseboats should have their hulls checked.

Head to the docks and beaches to help make sure the boats are secured and tied up tightly. Go to the Farmlands to make sure pens and stables are leak-proof. YOU will be asked if you're prepared for the rains as well! Do you have sensible rain boots, rain coats, a strong umbrella, a first aid kit, do you have enough food, medication, and anything else you might need? You don't? Better go get them while you're still dry and the paths are clear. No, no, no, residents will insist. You may have experienced serious rain or even hurricanes back home, but not like this, not like here.

And... there's that fear again.

Well, better to be safe than sorry, everyone will insist! Besides, everyone always needs a first aid kit in their home anyway! Even minor flooding can be inconvenient, to say the least.

Truly, all of Iyashikei is getting ready, as if holding its breath because as soon as June hits?

The rains will begin...

🦔 i. And That's Final 🦔

[The end of term festival of sorts was exactly where maria headed when she got the news about it on her Glimmer. She wanted to attend school during the next year, an actual classroom setting for the first time in her life, so she was doing a bit of research on the campus - seeing the site, speaking with the faculty, and observing the work of the students, of course! While the majority here would be graduating, it's still nice to get to see and talk to them, get a feel for how their experiences were like, and what to expect. The usual type of thing.

What she didn't expect to happen was getting struck with a stray spell. Nothing hurt, it sort of felt more like being touched slightly on the back, but it was rather startling to realize something had happened once a teacher came over to make sure she was alright. They apologized, said the effect would only last a few days at best, and handed her a pocket-sized mirror... Where Maria realize she'd been caught in a strange go-between of a hedgehog and a human (a ~~furry~~ anthro). She had slightly pointed ears, a tiny tail uncomfortably trying to nudge itself outside of the hem of her skirt, and she was also covered in a soft layer of fur and, of course...quills. Or, well, her hair's strands were hard and spiky like quills.]

O-Oh...this is going to take some getting used to...

[It's not like this is bad, but she can also feel smaller quills on her back, and Maria would be pretty mortified if she tore her dress because of them.]

☂️ ii. Weather Wise ☂️

[Maria lives very, very close to the canals - right next to them in fact - so when she was advised that there would need to be work done to reinforce the area against flooding and rising water levels, even she couldn't help but get a little nervous. Of course, she had Shadow to take care of her if the worst truly happened, but there was still the concern of losing everything she managed to accumulate over time to make their place comfortable, cute, and cozy (because you know Shadow ain't doing none of that. :|). But, all those material things can be replaced, so she doesn't want to worry about it too much. So many people are already clamoring together on the waterfront areas to do their part, and Maria waffles around a little, wondering how she can help. She can't do physical labor like most people can, so how can she make herself useful?

Well, in true twelve year old fashion, she sets up a little stand by where the largest group of workers are doing their thing, with large pitchers filled with tangy lemonade, icy water, and zesty fruit punch. She also managed to bake cookies and brownies (from box mixes, shh...she's still learning!) and drew an adorable little sign that reads in big, colorful letters:

FREE FOR ALL WORKERS!! Please help yourself. :)

Yes, there are absolutely drawings of hearts, stars, and flowers all over it, with an abundance of stickers also plastered all over the sign, too.]

Well, I really want to learn some Earth Science, more than what I already research in my spare time. Oh, and perhaps some History as well? It's fascinating what you can learn about what happened only a few hundred years in the past.

Hm... Something else I'd like to learn is obviously robotic engineering. I can design fairly well, but I still lack the practical skills to actually apply those designs to working concepts... My hands have never really been steady enough in the past, but I think I may be able to do it.

[Shadow is along for the ride like the good little service hedgehog he is. He knows Maria is very excited for the prospect of going to a proper school, and he knows she was a little disappointed not to be able to get started right away. She's technically too young for college, but she was more than smart enough. Shadow is certain that she'll ace whatever entrance exams they require. They would let her in.

If they knew what was good for them, anyway.

He himself has no interest in school. He learns better by just doing.

He's off finding a bottle of water for Maria when she's hit by the spell, and when he returns with it, he nearly drops it in surprise]

M... Maria! What happened?!

[She definitely is intelligent enough to skip all of the pre-college level education, but Maria had waffled with if she wanted to. Half of the reason she even wanted to attend school was because it would be the perfect way to make friends her age and actually get the social aspect of an education, which is what she's been lacking since...forever, actually. Even so, the university boasted the most in terms of knowledge, so she...couldn't walk away from something that clearly interested her, especially when it came to science.

But, uh...today's exhibit was mostly magic, because Maria looks at Shadow and his response to her new "look" and her ears fold back self-consciously. Is it that bad???]

I'm not quite sure, but...I believe a student's magic backfired somehow, and I was suddenly transformed. Is it bad? Did I ruin my shirt? [It feels like she's going to, and with how anxious she is, her quills are sticking up and out, not smooth and flat, so they are going to destroy her shirt if she doesn't relax.]

[It was a tough decision to make. But Shadow would support her no matter what she chose. He himself wasn't interested in any more schooling. What he'd had on the ARK was plenty for him, thanks.

He just sort of sputters for a moment. What are the chances?! He looks around for the guilty party, but Maria's condition concerns him more]

N-no, not yet, but if you don't calm down, you might. [THIS IS WHY HE DOESN'T WEAR CLOTHES] Quills react to emotions. Just... Stay here.

[he hands her the water bottle, and with that, Shadow vanishes. He returns a few minutes later with a new shirt, just something generic from the University's store with its logo. He removes a glove and uses one of his retractable claws to slice holes in the back of the shirt, then hands it to Maria] You can change into this one and save your current shirt, if you like.

[In all honesty, that does suit Shadow the best. He wouldn't really do well in a school setting, and he's plenty smart already. Plus, he really does learn best by observation and then implementation. If he wanted to ever pursue a higher education, there is also the option of doing a virtual one, too... That might align better with how he learns, actually.

But more pressing matters are on the docket right now. Like trying to keep herself calm so she doesn't shred her poor clothes. Easier said than done, because she is definitely feeling like everyone is looking at her (they are not, they are running around trying to do damage control as much as possible), but take the water and chugs a good portion of it to help.]

R-Right...yes. Understandable... [This is bizarre. She can hear and smell things so much better than before, and with all the chaos here, it kind of hurts her ears a little... When shadow returns, Maria takes the offered shirt and pulls it over her existing one. Shadow was wise to get a size up to accommodate her new, uh...appendages.] If it's damaged, it's alright, I can get a new one. I'd...rather not change out in the open, and I, um. I-I don't trust myself to make it to a place where I could change.

[Learning virtually... Only if it were virtual reality. Sitting at a computer and listening and reading for hours at a time? He wasn't as bad about it as Sonic, but even for him, sitting still that long would be awful. And he didn't care for computers much.

Shadow frowns and sighs, shaking his head] I can mend it, if you desire. But these idiots... firing off magical spells at random... they could really hurt someone. I'm going to find someone and make them fix this.

[.... even if it IS a good look for her]

[Maria shakes her head at the offer. It's really no big deal, a shirt is a shirt, she can really just get another one. Clothes get stained and damaged all the time, and if she grows, it will need to be replaced or donated anyway. She does frown a little bit. It's obviously from worry and concern for her safety, but...]

Shadow, they're still learning, and there are risks to learning anything, you know that. Grandfather and all the other researchers take multiple risks with their experiments, yet they've done incredible things. [She smiles, staring directly at him in particular. He is, in her opinion, the most incredible thing.] I understand the implications, and yes someone could have gotten hurt, but no one did as far as I can see. I'm fine, and I'm sure this will wear off. We shouldn't put the people here under any more stress than they already are under, undoubtedly.

Once things calm down, if I'm still...like this, then we can ask someone, politely, what the next steps are.

Almost immediately, upon learning there was an opportunity to help in a way that he could, Izuku was leaping into action to help with preparations for the rainy season. Though he lives in the larger cities of Japan, where flooding isn't as big of a problem, monsoons and rising water levels (and the occasional tsunami either by a Villain or natural weather patterns) does happen from time to time. He knows what to do, and while he no longer has super strength, he's still strong naturally from all the training he had to do just to be able to USE One For All.

Hauling a wheelbarrow full of sandbags and other tools, he spots the set up and sign and can't help but smile at it all. How cute, and the girl at the counter is rather adorable, too! Waving, and wiping his brow free of sweat, Izuku approaches.

"What an amazing set up. You did this all yourself?"

Maria beams right back, waving cheerfully as the young man approaches her. She motions toward a roll of paper towels too, in case he needs to wipe his face. It is warm out, and though she hasn't done too much in terms of physical labor (she literally cannot), the sun is making it a little rough...

"Yes, I did. I can't do much lifting and moving around, but I still wanted to help in a way I could. I thought this would be best to keep everyone fueled and hydrated, and to keep spirits up. Please, take what you like!"

Oh, Izuku will take one of those paper towels, gladly! He would hate to get her area all dirty, especially after she's made it look so tidy and cute. He cleans his face, hands, face, and the back of his neck, breathing out a small sigh. It already feels good to take a quick break, but he is itching to get back to it, too. Work never ceases for a person like him!

"That's a very gracious thing you did, and I'm sure everyone appreciates it very much. Support like this can be just as powerful." He says, while pouring himself some lemonade and taking a cookie. Izuku's not crazy for sweets, but he doesn't have them, either. Plus, these are really tasty, and hit the spot just right. "Did you make these too, miss...?"

That is much appreciated! Even if she doesn't mind a little dirt and grime, Maria probably shouldn't be around a lot of potential pathogens. She's not a China doll by any means, but she is quite fragile still. Either way, setting up her little stall in the shade was a good idea for them both, it looks like.

"Maria! Maria Robotnik, it's a pleasure to meet you," she smiles, shaking her head. "Not really... They were pre-made mostly, I just put them on a sheet and baked them in the oven. I'm still not the best cook, you see...but I am trying to learn to make some simple dishes little by little. I hope everything still tastes alright though...even if it's not entirely fresh."

Izuku looks over the girl before him curiously. She talks very formally, but she can't be that old, can she? Middle school, perhaps, or even just beyond primary! But is she all on her own? If she needs to learn to cook, then...

"Maria-chan," He attempte dher last name, but there's no chance he won't destroy that with his accent. "You're not here by yourself, are you? Living on your own, I mean..."

While not unheard of, and plenty of kids wander freely in Japan, living alone is a little much, isn't it? That kind of responsibility is much too great for someone so young! Does she have a guardian of some kind? Or maybe she attends the school here? There is a dorm setting not unlike UA....

"Hm? Oh, no! No, I'm here with my brother!" She lifts her hands pacifyingly and laugh a little bit. It's sweet that people worry and care about her enough to ask, as this certainly isn't the first time it's happened. "We live together quite close to here, in fact...but our living situation was rather different before coming here, you see. It was far more communal, so learning skills to take care of oneself is a bit trickier than anticipated, but we're managing, both Shadow and I learn quickly."

They're both incredibly smart, and Maria's good with machines. Honestly, her baking will probably be better than stovetop cooking, because baking is so straightforward and follows a strict formula and process, and is essentially science if you really think about it.

"I appreciate your concern, you're very kind, um...?" He never did give his name, did he? Or did she forget?

Her brother? Ah, then that's good, if she's with family, and it sounds like it may be an older sibling as well. Izuku relaxes, then nods his head with a smile as she explains further. What a smart girl...she speaks almost like an adult in some cases, and it sounds like she had a rather busy lifestyle before. Communal living...maybe she also stayed in a dorm? Like how he does at UA? Or it might be something entirely different.

"I see! I'm glad your brother is here to keep you company-ah! R-Right, I'm sorry! I'm Izuku! Midoriya Izuku."

He bows forward, a small blush on his face as well. Forgot to even introduce himself, how embarrassing!

Older sibling is...debatable. Shadow technically is a teenager in terms of his physicality, and extraordinarily intelligent like herself - they're both pretty much geniuses, but chronologically? Shadow might be younger than Maria. He was created, not necessarily born in the traditional way. But regardless, he is her sibling and she loves him unconditionally and unapologetically. If given the opportunity, she would talk about him for hours on end, and how wonderful he is.

"Izu...ku? Did I say that right?" Another difficult name, that's going to be the norm here, isn't it? "I'm Maria Robotnik, it's a pleasure to meet you. Have you arrived here recently? I don't think I've seen you around very much before today."

Oh, the bow...he must be from the East then! Just like Sakura!!

Nodding, with a slight chuckle, Izuku smiles. "Yes, that's right, but if it's easier, you're welcome to call me Deku, Maria-san." Deku's not even going to attempt to pronounce this girl's last name. Too many hard consonants that it just becomes a tongue-twister... He doesn't want to be disrespectful mispronouncing her name just as much as she would his!

"Mm, I arrived maybe a month ago?" He rubs the back of his neck, thinking hard. Has it really been that long? It feels like both less and more time... "I've actually been trying to, ah... Find my place here. I'll admit it's been difficult, but the opportunity to help is familiar."

"Oh, is that a nickname from your world?" She genuinely has no idea, but it is a bit easier to say than his first name, though she would have pushed herself to learn the pronunciation regardless. It doesn't seem very nice to not at least try.

"Whatever you most feel comfortable with, I suppose... But beyond that, if you're having a difficult time finding your way, I would be more than happy to assist with whatever you need! I've been here for some time now, and I know a fair bit about the surroundings. If you have your Glimmer with you as well, I could probably point out some good spots to dine on a map, if you prefer takeout or delivery."
