Double New Years Festival

WELCOME NEW ARRIVALS!

You made it just in time! It's the month-long Double New Years Festival! The Lunar and Solar year are coming to an end, what an auspicious time for you to have agreed to help create kindness and do good deeds! All over Iyashikei Main Hub and Outer Rim people have hung colorful paper lanterns, twinkling lights, garlands, wreaths, and ribbons in all sorts of colors to bring light and cheer to their Double New Years. Snow is gently falling off and on both in the Main Hub and the Outer Rim. The Great Iyashikei Redwoods are dusted with snow, and the Whitecap Mountains are living up to their names covered from top to bottom in snow as well.

Winter time is in full swing here in Iyashikei, bundle up to stay warm, new arrivals! If you haven't the right clothes, they're easy enough to find at the markets and stores.

Would you like to make a lantern to be hung up? Or perhaps you would like to make a wreath? Of course, you can help some of the current residents decorate! Turn a corner and there's always someone to help with decorations or cleaning. Clean homes for a clean Double New Years, after all! You may notice that helping and talking to others is already causing Stardust to collect along your skin. Don't stress! That's a good thing! Winter Stardust is unique! Winter Stardust takes on the shape of snowflakes and helps so that the cold doesn't bother you anyway.

Every other street or canal seems to have a winter market going on until sundown. They are selling all sorts of charms to help get you some extra luck for the Double New Years, or candles to help light up the home, or cleanse away negative energy. It's very common to buy a small gift for you or your friends to start the Double New Years with a smile. Some are gag gifts, some are more serious, and all of them show care and craft.

Of course, what's a winter market without amazing and delicious food? Just some of the items might be: yummy baked and steamed buns with meat or custard inside, fruit or meat pies, candied walnuts, dried fruit, fresh mandarin oranges, cookies, and everything else in between. No matter what treats you buy, to help you get into the spirit, some of the Council members have added some... magic to the food and it lifts your spirit and puts you in a friendlier mood. Besides, what good food doesn't already do that, after all? Eat a bit too much and you might be downright giddy and affectionate.

Maybe you don't want to eat or shop. The parks have been cleared of snow, though, it's still quite cold. Come have a seat, at many of the parks are lion-dance performers and dragon puppets to celebrate the Double New Years. They're even pretty good... but... well... you notice something going on...

OH DEAR! Seems like one of the lion dancers hurt their ankle, could you jump in to help save the performance? You don't have to know the steps! They don't want to disappoint the crowd! Please do SOMETHING to help!

The festival isn't done when the sun has gone down! At night, there's ice skating along the smaller, frozen canals. Don't know how to ice skate? Don't worry! Penguins are there to help you gain your ice feet. Yes, actual penguins, though they don't act as such. The penguins are there at the behest of two Council members, you'll know them if you meet them, one is a lively gentleman who seems to have an odd job everywhere you look, and the other is a lovely woman who is never wrong and seems practically perfect in every way.

What is the end of a festival without a giant firework show! Taking place over the bay between the Farmlands and the Main Hub, you can thank another Council member for the display. Giant fireworks fill the air, one even looks like a giant red dragon that soars across the sky. It's a perfect end to a perfect month-long festival!

Farmland Follies

OH NO! One of the farmers forgot to put his herd away at the end of the festival and they broke out of their pen in fear of the fireworks!

It's your first Re-Quest, should you be so inclined to help fill it. Can you please find and bring back his herd? They've scattered across the Farmlands. You can't miss them, all of them are tagged with a yellow tag on their ear.

They've gotten into some strange places! They're in people's backyards, some of the cows are munching on the winter crops, there are some blocking traffic, and others are lying atop the Metro-Rail tracks. They're everywhere!

While the cattle are incredibly docile and even love a good scratch under the chin, those horns aren't just for show. Do be careful not to spook them because they will defend themselves. Mothers are especially skittish about how you might approach their young. The horns aren't going to be your biggest problem, though.

You'll find that they enjoy playing in the cold in a much wider area than their pen (large though it may be). They're not as stubborn as a donkey, but some of the bulls can get up to 1,300 lbs, and if they don't want to move? They're not going to!
You will need to work with someone else to get those cows back home!

Once they're returned? What is your reward for this Re-Quest? 5 shimmers of Stardust for every cow, and a chance to pet some adorable cows. What more could you want?

Polar Bear Plunge or Hot Springs Soak

With it being a Double New Years, it's time to wash away any bad luck and get yourself some good luck! What better way to do that than donning a bikini or speedo and diving into some literally freezing water in some of the canals of the Main Hub for the Polar Bear Plunge! Don't worry, every location has staff on hand to help in case you go into shock! You needn't stay in for more than a few minutes to get the bad luck to wash away.

The Polar Bear Plunge isn't just a quirky tradition, though! For those who willingly participate, it really does bring good luck for an entire month! Maybe you'll ace that test, or you'll get that apprenticeship everyone is vying for, who can say what the Polar Bear Plunge Luck will bring?

While the cold never bothered some anyway, you might be reluctant to dive in, good luck or not. Worry not, the Great Iyashikei Redwood Hot Springs are open again for winter! Take the Metro-Rail to the main lodge and find your troubles melt away during your stay.

The hot springs don't wash away bad luck, nor do they provide good luck, instead, they're known for helping to ease a burdened mind. They make worries and troubles seem far away, less personal and raw, and help provide perspective on the past.

But be careful! The staff is there to remind you that even just one minute more than 60 minutes in the hot springs may cause more than just personal worries becoming distant! Those who stay too long in the hot springs have been known to have temporary amnesia. But don't worry, it doesn't last for more than a day or two... The more you talk to someone else to help figure out who you are, the easier it is for your memories to return.

... In any case, if it gets really bad you will be taken to the medical staff at Heart of Hope Hospital and they will get you back on track with your memory. But best to listen to the staff and the 60-minute timer they provide you if you want to prevent it entirely.

Did You Say Lodge?

Why yes we did! On top of the hot springs that are only open during the winter time, the lodge is at its busiest. The lodge is famous for its beautiful views as it sits right up against a small lake (which is frozen closer to the shoreline but the center never freezes) against the base of the Whitecap Mountains.

If you'd like something exciting, you can take the ski lift up to the top of the smaller mountains! There are bunny slopes and much more extreme slopes for the more advanced, you can rent all the equipment you need for snowboarding and skiing. Or if you prefer, there are gentle slopes for tubing! There are instructors from the lodge who are happy to show you how to ski or snowboard if you don't know how. Of course, with all the snow, there are ample opportunities for making snow angels, snowball fights, and snowmen.

Whether you want to spend your day indoors or outdoors, there's no denying how welcoming and inviting the fire pits look. There are blankets to wrap up in, and of course, marshmallows to roast, and if so inclined, chocolate and graham crackers to make s'mores. Resting around the fireplace makes you want to open up and share something from home, that might be the Council's doing or just the natural magic of a warm fire and hot chocolate. Maybe what you share is a poem, or a song, a fairytale, or something else. It can be a lot or a little, the coziness of the fire makes it feel easier to do so. And goodness! Just look at how you're gathering Winter Stardust along your skin.

If you want to enjoy a true winter wonderland, oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh! The sleigh travels along the most popular trails around the lodge. You'll get to see the redwood giants in all their winter splendor! There's just one catch. The sleigh driver only goes if two to three people ride in the sleigh.. That's great if you're riding with a friend, but don't be surprised if you and a stranger (or two) are going on the hour-long tour. This is a chance to earn more Winter Stardust, at least?

Izuku Midoriya | My Hero Academia

[ Izuku feels a little bit guilty about leaving his world behind because of the situation it was in. He had intended to decline the invitation what with a war looming very close on the horizon but he began his sentence with "I'd love to help but-" and before he knew it, apparently the owl took that as an agreement and he was whisked away.

Now that he's been reassured he'll go back to the exact moment he left and he's walked around a little, this... seems like a much needed break from all the stresses he's been through lately. There's a happy smile on his face from seeing so many people gathered together and celebrating, something he's looking forward to happening again back home once all the trouble is over with.

You can find him in a couple places!

The first is dealing with the escaped cattle! He's spotted one on the tracks and he approaches it slowly, holding his hands up while he talks in a quiet and calm voice to hopefully not spook it, concerned etched across his face. ] It's really dangerous for you to be there... Why don't we go somewhere else that's more safe? I bet you'd be happier being in a place that has more food, right? Not a lot to eat around here! Now how am I going to move you...

[ Help him wrangle the cow? Or you might find him testing out snowboarding! He bounces a little on his feet at the top of a hill, strapped into a board already and grinning widely. ] This'll be so fun! It's a great training opportunity too! You have to work on your balance and figure out how to maneuver the board for speed or braking! And you can up the challenge by switching up what stance you're using!

[ He can also be found making a snowman... one that doesn't look like a regular one. This snowman has a large smile on his face with two long tuffs of hair sticking out of the top. It's a bit tricky getting the tuffs to stay up but Izuku is working on them with slow precision, moving his hands carefully and looking determined and dedicated to getting the snowman in the perfect image of his mentor All Might during the hero's glory days. He'll also happily get into a snowball fight if asked!

For another place you might find him, he's wrapped himself in a cozy blanket but it's falling off his shoulders a little as he leans forward to hold a marshmallow on a stick toasting over the campfire. There's a cup of steaming hot chocolate set nearby to enjoy in a bit but first he's figuring out how to put a s'more together. ] So once the marshmallow is toasted, you take two graham crackers and put it between the two? And put chocolate on the top?

[ And for the final place, Izuku is watching the fireworks going off at the end of the night, sitting on the ground while hugging his knees to his chest so he can rest his chin on them and crane his head back to see the fireworks as bursts of light fill the sky, a happy and content smile on his face while he watches. ] It's been a while since I got to see fireworks!

Snowman

[This is truly amazing. Maria has only ever seen snow in books and videos, never truly experienced it for herself...for obvious reasons. She's bundled up well, and actually has a dusting of Winter Stardust decorating the skin that's actually showing, though she still looks...pale, and her lips a little discolored. Despite everything, Maria is still sickly, and being out too long will escalate her condition. She's not really paying attention to that though, because she's twelve and having the best time of her life right now.

Her, uh...snowhog is coming out a little lumpy and uneven, but that's what makes it so charming. The angry face she's giving it, too, makes her laugh, turning into a deep and slightly wet cough. Still she remains undeterred, beaming and looking like she's never done anything like this before in her life. Because she hasn't.]

This is so much fun!! I never thought there'd be so much to do with snow!! What are you making, a...big bunny? [She has seen a big cat before, so a big bunny is not as crazy as it sounds.]

[ Izuku catches the cough and looks over at the younger girl with some concern... Maybe she has a cold? But her smile makes him smile too. ]

It's a person! My mentor, All Might. These are the tips of his hair, it sticks up like that! What are you making...?

[It's a much more than just a cold, and the winter chill is doing nothing to help, but for now Maria is okay. She just shouldn't stay out for too long...though she is only twelve, and doesn't exactly heed the warnings of her body in most cases, especially when she's having so much fun.]

Your mentor? Like a teacher? [She's schooled aboard the ARK, with a few other children, but not many, it's kind of a tiny classroom - the space colony was mostly a giant research facility, after all.] Oh!! This is my friend, Shadow!! Shadow the Hedgehog, th-though I don't think I'm making him look very good...

[Her hands are shaking, and feel a little numb from touching all the snow and ice, so that's probably why. Plus, Shadow's quills are hard as heck to shape, but Maria still grins proudly and points to the frowny face she made with a giggle-turned cough.]

He's kind of grumpy, or looks that way a lot, so I made that too!!

Yeah, like a teacher! He's a little more than that to me, he's helped me out in more ways than just teaching me.

A hedgehog...? [ Izuku is used to seeing people who look like animals in his world, so he comes over to inspect it closer. ] Oh, I see! Those are his quills you were working on, right? And I can see his face and eyes... He looks really good! You did a great job! I'm sure if he saw it, he'd think it was good too! Do you want some help making the rest of the quills?

[ He laughs when she says her friend is grumpy. ] I have a friend who is grumpy a lot too. [ Somewhere Kacchan is yelling at him he's not grumpy, dumb Deku! ]

Oh are your gloves too cold from touching all the snow now...? You can use mine if you want! They might be a little thicker. [ He smacks and brushes them together a couple of times to get any residual snow off, already intending to pull them off and hand them over. ]

[The little snow-Shadow definitely does not look like your typical hedgehog, but it is charming in its own way. Maria managed to even find some red berries (probably holly berries, which she will toss away after, since they're poisonous) for his eyes. She smiles, then laughs behind her hand, because Maria knows Shadow would not approve, but be polite for her sake. Her brother is grouchy but sweet in that way. Maybe, once she gets a little more acclimated to this cold weather, she can stay out in it longer and...toss a snowball or two. That'd be a lot of fun.]

I think those types of people are the most fun, and care a lot more than they let on. Your friend must be an incredible person. [Ever the optimist, Maria really does believe in the goodness of all people. Grumpy is just another way of saying one is...spirited. Energetic, even.] I hope we both get to meet up with our grumpy friends at some po--oh!

Oh, that's very kind of you, but...won't your hands get cold then?

Yeah he's amazing! [ Izuku is quick to vouch for that!

He shakes his head as he presses the gloves into her hands. ] It's okay! You look like you need them more than I do. And I have a little trick I can do! Just watch...

[ He smiles like he's about to share a fun secret with her, holding his hands up flat together and rubbing them back and forth. Only he adds a little One For All power into it, making his body start sparking with green lightning a little bit and his hands speed up. After a couple moments, the green light goes away and he holds his hands down flat out to her so she can poke them and see they're warm now. ] I can warm them up like that!

[Oh? Maria leans forward to watch, curiosity piqued, and actually jumps a little bit with surprise when she notices the green sparks dancing on this kind stranger's skin. She's seen that sort of thing before, with Shadow's chaos energy, but never on a human. That sort of energy flux always seems inherent only in her anthropomorphic (and alien) friend and his peers (who aren't aliens, but...yeah. \:|/).

She is, however, very fascinated, her scientific mind excited and already clamoring at the possibilities.]

Wow!! How did you do that?! Was it magic? Or--...no, it couldn't be static electricity, that was far more than just a simple spark. Some sort of energy burst? Ah, if only I could register the frequency and other variables...it almost looked like Chaos Energy...

Yeah, it's a burst of energy! It might seem like magic... but in the world I come from, almost everyone has some kind of super power we call quirks. People can do all kinds of different things with these abilities! Whatever you can think of, there's probably a quirk of it somewhere in the world. Mine lets me increase my physical capabilities so I can get faster and stronger, along with a few other things. The green light you see is a thing that happens when I use it.

[ He's happy to talk nerd about quirks! ]

Incredible... [A world full of people who have near-miraculous powers and abilities like this. Superpowers, or "quirks", mimicking some of the things she's seen studied about Shadow, and clearly some of his new friends as well. What sorts of effects does that have on a human body in relation to someone like the black hedgehogs? Are there drawbacks? Side-effects? How does the energy flux correlate to regular body functions? She has so many questions!] ...M-May I?

[Maria holds out her hand, intending to take his, just to inspect for a moment or two. She sort of wants to investigate this a little bit, to see what she can puzzle together about this kind of energy.]

[ It's hard to really explain how some quirks works because they defy the laws of the world. He thinks about someone like Tokage of Class 1-B who can literally split her body apart into pieces and still be in conscious control of them all. It probably doesn't seem possible for someone to be able to survive that but she does somehow. ]

Oh sure! [ Izuku will hold out his hands for inspection and also to hold if she wants to soak up some of the warmth too. ]

[In all honesty, Maria would still kind of understand - the laws of physics are kind of relative when her world has superpowered animals, and jewels, and things happening that risk the safety of the planet. Shit's wild. Though she would probably be a little stunned to hear about certain quirks, only because they are even beyond what Maria's ever experienced.

Maria fumbles a little with the oversized gloves, but her grip is gentle and careful. She watches the sparks dance on Izuku's skin, the way light seems to light up on certain parts of him, and moves his fingers, frowning at the scars and deformities.]

Was this caused by your power? It looks serious...

[ He's reminded of a young Melissa! ]

Oh! Yeah, it took me a while to get the hang of it... I'm still working on getting it under complete control... but I'm a lot better than I used to be! I've learned how to manage it safely a lot more now. I just use different percentages now, before I was using my power at 100 percent and that caused a lot of damage...

[Maria definitely does have some similarities to Melissa Shield! They're both blond, American, and pretty darn good with machines, though Maria's only done design thus far, never actually built anything yet.

Her frown deepens a little bit, as she listens and bends Izuku's wrist slowly, rolling it on the joint and also flexing his fingers.]

...That was very careless of you. [She doesn't mean to scold, but this damage is rather severe.]

Maximum output, especially with something in a "testing phase" is never going to give an optimal result, and the probability of a crash is just the same - one hundred percent. I'm glad you figured out to use a lesser output of energy, but...looking at the damage of your hand, I don't think you should really use that power at full capacity going forward, at least not without warrant.

...Or something to lessen the strain it clearly puts on your body.

[ He accepts it in stride! ] Yeah, it was... Sometimes it was situations where I had to go all out to protect someone but other times... You're right, it was probably because I got a little too reckless... [ He's sheepish as he agrees. ] I have support items I use now to help out with that, they're special gloves I wear with my costume! And I train every day so I can slowly up the percentage I can safely use until I can get to 100 percent.

If you can't do something on your own, you need to rely on others to help you, not--...

[Maria pauses, thinking for a moment about how hypocritical she was about to sound. Doesn't she oftentimes push herself, despite literally needing to rely on others all the time? Her illness makes it so she can't even run several yards without getting winded, dizzy, and threatening to pass out. She knows all of this - to take it easy and not be reckless - but it's still frustrating knowing she can't just...live like anyone and everyone else. And maybe, just out of petty childishness, petulance, she does things she's not supposed to.

Hell, just being out in the cold right now is going to have some repercussions later. She's definitely going to feel those consequences later.]

...I'm sorry, I shouldn't scold you without knowing the full story, or you yourself. That was my mistake, I apologize. It sounds like you're taking far better care of yourself now, and...oh, um. If you have that gear here with you, or a schematic of it, I could try to maintain it, or develop a substitute prototype for you to use.

[Weiss wants to make a snow dog instead of a snowman for reasons and she ends up making a snow corgi. Sure, a bigger dog might have been easier but that one reminds her of a very special dog from home.
